The College of Agriculture at the University of Basra organized a seminar on "Survival Strategies in Desert Insects."
The seminar, presented by Professor Muslim Ashour Abdul Wahid, aimed to highlight the ability of desert insects to adapt to harsh environmental conditions such as drought, high temperatures, and water scarcity.
The seminar included phenotypic strategies such as small size and camouflage, physiological strategies using heat shock proteins, and intermittent gas exchange, as well as behavioral strategies such as nocturnal activity to avoid daytime heat and cooling by evaporation. It also described the desert climate in terms of temperature, low rainfall, and severe day-night thermal fluctuations, in addition to the scarcity of vegetation and water scarcity.
