The College of Agriculture at the University of Basra organized a seminar on an integrated management program for the midge insect in Basra Governorate.
The seminar, in which researcher Rusul Abdel Amir Abboud lectured, aimed to reduce the use of chemical pesticides by calculating the critical economic limit of the insect and developing sampling programs to reduce effort and time in integrated management programs.
The episode discussed the economic importance of this pest, which is considered one of the most important economic pests that affect date palm fruits early at the beginning of the decade and continues until the later stages, causing economic losses of up to 60% and sometimes up to 100%.
The study recommended the optimal use of control techniques such as control with safe organic pesticides, biological control and agricultural operations with the aim of reducing or avoiding the use of chemical pesticides that are considered environmental pollutants while reducing the risks to human health and the environment in general.
