The College of Agriculture at the University of Basra organized an awareness seminar entitled "Violent Extremism: Its Causes, Origins, and the Role of the Family in Addressing It."
The seminar, presented by Sheikh Murtadha Al-Zarkani, representing the General Secretariat of the Holy Shrine of Imam Hussein, addressed the causes of extremism in some individuals' behavior, including emotional deprivation, violent methods, influence from the surrounding environment, psychological pressures, and the absence of positive role models.
The seminar also discussed the role of the family in preventing a child's deviation towards such behavior. This begins with choosing a suitable spouse and avoiding violent and rigid parenting methods. Parents should also provide attention and supervision. The speaker supported his points with verses from the Holy Quran, the Prophet's biography, and the teachings of the Imams of Guidance, all aimed at fostering individuals who belong to a conservative, purposeful, and constructive society.
