The College of Agriculture at the University of Basra, represented by its Dean, Professor Dr. Sarmad Ghazi Mohammed Al-Shawi, participated in a comprehensive workshop held in Erbil Governorate under the slogan "For a Sustainable Agricultural Future." During the workshop, the official launch of the "Steering Committee for the Agricultural Sector and Climate Change in Basra Governorate" was announced.

This two-day workshop was jointly organized by the international organization TearFund and the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), in close cooperation with the Basra Governorate government, and with the participation of representatives from government departments and donor agencies.

During his participation, Professor Dr. Sarmad Ghazi Al-Shawi emphasized the scientific and academic advisory role that the College of Agriculture, along with its research staff, plays in providing research-based solutions to address the crises of climate change, water scarcity, and salinity facing the agricultural sector in the governorate.

The steering committee, chaired by Professor Hassan Al-Najjar, Deputy Governor of Basra for Agricultural Affairs, with the College of Agriculture as a key member, seeks to unify and coordinate efforts between the local government, key and supporting departments, and international and local civil society organizations. This aims to ensure that agricultural projects submitted by organizations and donors are prioritized to adapt to extreme weather events and safeguard food security in Basra.
